What are the best community centres in Markham?Four stand out. The Markham Pan Am Centre in Markham Centre has a 10-lane Olympic-size pool and three gyms, and hosted badminton, table tennis and water polo at the 2015 Pan Am Games. The Aaniin Community Centre and Library on 14th Avenue, completed in 2017, has an aquatics centre, a double gym, a teaching kitchen and a library. The Cornell Community Centre and Library, opened in 2012, has an eight-lane pool and is connected to Markham Stouffville Hospital. The Angus Glen Community Centre offers an arena, a pool and a library. For many families, the nearest centre shapes weekends as much as the home itself.
Markham has invested heavily in large, modern community centres. For families, they are where children learn to swim, teens play basketball, seniors take fitness classes and everyone borrows library books.
Michael John Lau, a REALTOR® with the Kaizen Real Estate Team, one of the most active real estate teams in Markham and York Region, often maps the nearest community centre for buyers alongside schools and transit, because a short walk to a pool and a library can change a family’s whole week.

Markham Pan Am Centre
Opened on November 23, 2014, at a cost of about $78 million, the Markham Pan Am Centre was built for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, where it hosted badminton, table tennis and water polo. Today it serves residents with a 10-lane Olympic-size pool, three gymnasiums with 12 badminton courts, dance and yoga rooms and a two-level fitness centre. It sits in Markham Centre near the Viva rapidway and Unionville GO station.
It also hosts swim meets and tournaments, so check event schedules before planning a lane swim.
Aaniin Community Centre and Library
Completed in 2017 on a 13-acre site at 5665 14th Avenue, Aaniin combines an aquatics centre, a double gym, a teaching kitchen, a library, a performance space and outdoor basketball courts. The teaching kitchen makes it a favourite for cooking classes, and the library and gym under one roof make it easy to combine errands and activities.

Cornell Community Centre and Library
Opened on December 17, 2012, the Cornell centre has an eight-lane 25-metre pool with therapeutic features, a triple gym with basketball courts, a fitness centre with an indoor running track and a full library. It is connected to Markham Stouffville Hospital, which is unusual and convenient for families. For more on the community, see the Cornell neighbourhood guide.
Angus Glen Community Centre
The Angus Glen Community Centre combines an arena, a sports centre, a swimming pool, a library branch and meeting space in one building in north-central Markham. It is a hub for hockey and skating families and sits close to Angus Glen Golf Club.
Arenas, skating and winter sports
Hockey and figure skating are a big part of family life in Markham. Several community centres include indoor arenas used by local minor hockey, ringette and skating clubs, along with public skating times for families. Ice time is in high demand in winter, so club registration usually opens months ahead. If your children play, living close to their home arena can save many early-morning drives. Outdoor rinks in some parks add free winter skating when the weather cooperates.
Other centres worth knowing
Markham has many more neighbourhood centres and arenas beyond the four highlighted here, including the Centennial, Thornhill, Milliken Mills, Markham Village and Mount Joy community centres. Each has its own mix of pools, arenas, gyms and program rooms. The City’s pool locations page and program guide list what each one offers, so check the centre closest to any home you are considering.
Getting the most from your local centre
- Create your recreation account early so you are ready when registration opens. Swimming lessons and summer camps often fill quickly.
- Use drop-in programs. Lane swims, public skates and open gym times are an easy way to try a centre before signing up.
- Get a library card. Markham Public Library branches inside community centres offer programs for children, newcomers and seniors, often free.
- Check memberships. Fitness memberships can be better value than single visits if you go often.
- Ask about subsidies through York Region if cost is a barrier.
Newcomers often find community centres are the fastest way to meet neighbours. Parents connect at swim lessons, and seniors find walking groups and classes. For many families, the centre becomes the heart of the neighbourhood.
How community centres affect where families live
- Walkability: living within walking distance of a pool and library makes lessons and visits far easier.
- Program demand: popular swimming and camp programs fill quickly, so families near a busy centre should register as soon as programs open.
- Weekend life: arenas and gyms bring tournaments and events, which adds activity and some traffic nearby.
- Affordability help: York Region offers recreation subsidies for eligible low-income families.
